Tips & Tricks

    February 2012

  1. February is the official month of love! It’s also the time to show a little love to your gardens by gently preparing them for the spring! On occasion, Texas is known for experiencing a few cold snaps around mid February; however, on average Houston will usually receive its last freeze within the first week of February.
  2. From the lawn to the flower beds, there are always freeze dried landscapes in need of special attention. Here are a few T.L.C. Tips to help prepare for spring, and cause your landscapes to bloom beautifully!

T.L.C. #1 - Pruning

  • Ornamental Grasses- Cut back ornamental grasses within inches of the ground to ensure that the new shoots emerge.
  • Roses- For a variety of roses, such as miniatures and hybrids, they will benefit directly from heavy pruning right around Valentine's Day! Trim old garden roses to shape the plants. And don’t forget to prune climbing roses while they are still dormant.
  • Perennials- Prune back perennials that are overgrown or have frost damage to allow a fresh start of growth for the spring.
  • Azaleas & Oriental Magnolias- When it comes to azaleas and magnolias, WAIT until after the spring bloom cycle to prune them.

  1. T.L.C. #2 - Weeds & Pests
  • Pulling Weeds- Pull winter weeds out of the landscape beds and apply pre-emergent herbicide to stop spring weeds before they start. Make sure to then apply a minimum of two inches of mulch over all beds.
  • Weed Control- Now is the time! Don't delay on weed control. It’s proven best to handle weeds while they are young, tender, and while their roots are manageable. So feel free to attack before they sprout.
  • Pests- Check for scale insects on ornamental flowers, such as camellias, hollies, and magnolias. Treat with a horticultural oil spray while it is still cool outside.

T.L.C. #3 - Watering & Irrigation Systems

  • Professional Assistance- Be sure to call a professional out to check for clogs in drip lines, and to inspect sprinkler heads to ensure that your systems are operating properly before the warmer temperatures of spring and summer arrive.
  • System Adjustments- Don't forget to make seasonal adjustments to irrigation clocks. Conserving water is extremely crucial and economical!
